Summary
Leadership is harder than it needs to be. People's behaviour is a mystery and most leaders struggle with the people dimension of their role. In a convincing and witty approach, 'Hardwired Humans' explains both why people behave as they do at work and also the implications of how leaders can make practical use of the insight to lead more successfully. The convincing side of the book is in explaining the significance of our change in habitat just 250 years ago. Homo sapiens emerged on the plains of Africa around 200,000 years ago yet it's only with the Industrial Revolution that we left our hunting, gathering and village societies to work in offices and factories. A mere 250 years is no time at all for our ingrained behavioural instincts to change. Little surprise, therefore, that the behavior that ensured our survival on the savannah plains of Africa over the millennia is alive and well in the corridors, meeting rooms and offices of today's organisations! We survived on the savannah because we are a social animal. The same behaviour - clan connections, hierarchy, gossip, politics, social display, sexual competition - is alive in workplaces. The book explains the science of the 9 human instincts and the how leaders can best use the instincts to lead more successfully.
