| Summary |
The United Arab Emirates are the pearls of the Persian Bay. Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the commercial and tourist centers of the area and were developed within breathtaking speed. The images of the cities are dominated by office buildings, luxury hotels and shopping malls. There are skyscrapers made of concrete, metal and glass but down below them are the old towered houses, the 'souqs', the roofed bazaars, mosques with multiple towers, the hectic markets and the colorful harbors. The museums of the ancient forts keep alive the tradition of the ancient Arab professions folklore. Thanks to the duty-free regime, the shopping malls are cheap and offer an incredible variety of big designer brand clothing, as well as technical gadgets, natural pearls and oriental rugs. Dubai's golden bazaar in itself can be an attractive port of destination. The elegant Burj al Arab hotel, shaped as a wind-blown sail, is only a forerunner of the futuristic buildings of the near future, the Palm Islands and the underwater-hotel. The metropolises are surrounded by desert, with its sand dunes and rare bright oases, Bedouin tents and camel caravans. |
