Summary
Teenager Lene lives in Nazi Germany and is in love with Ludwig. Both despise the compulsory Hitler Youth. Their anti-war attitude gets them noticed by their squad leaders. In 1943 seventeen-year-old Ludwig is called up and ordered to the hell of the Eastern Front. Lene's and Ludwig's promise each other to believe in Ludwig's return, in a future, but within weeks Ludwig is missing in action. Lene abandons her promise, because all that matters now is surviving. British and American air-raids on Berlin are relentless and the Soviet army is closing in. She moves to Hanover. In 1946, Lene returns to Berlin, driven to find out what happened to Ludwig.
