Summary In 1911, recently orphaned 10-year-old Mary Lennox is sent from her home in British-occupied India to her uncle's mansion, Misselthwaite Manor, in Yorkshire, England. Initially cold and unpleasant, as Mary explores her new surroundings she blossoms and grows. "If you look the right way," Mary says, "you can see the whole world is a garden."
