Summary The North Water follows disgraced ex-army surgeon Patrick Sumner who signs up as ship's doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic. He meets harpooner Henry Drax, a brutish killer whose amorality has been shaped to fit the harshness of his world. Sumner finds himself on an ill-fated journey where a search for redemption becomes a harsh struggle for survival.
