Summary Southern Rhodesia, 1959. The dramas of living in this volatile state are brought to life by three families, the Bryants, the Ngwenyas and the Quilter-Phillipses. The Bryant family are vital to the survival of the black rhino. But with the damning of the Zambezi, they've got their work cut out. They spotted a young calf, named Makuti, which enforces their determination to protect the black rhino. The tensions between races and political factions steadily increase. Already-strained friendships and romances are nearly impossible to maintain when the young Natalie Bryant is kidnapped by political terrorists. As it sparks a chain of tragic events, no-one can ever return to the way things were. Yet, Makuti still survives. Zimbabwe, 2009. The survival of Makuti is of particular importance to all the families, as the demand for rhino horn escalates. Emmerson Ngwenya, the Zimbabwean Government's Assistant Minister for Land Redistribution, is quick to notice the opportunity to profit, and also to settle some old scores. Everyone is forced to confront the pasts that have shaped their lives, but with stakes being so high, is a future for all possible?
