Summary Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? : Director Robert Aldrich’s story: a thriller about an aging ex-vaudeville child star who initiates a psychotic reign of terror over her crippled ‘30s movie-queen sister. His stars: Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. All he needed was the money. But when Aldrich scoured Hollywood for backing, he kept hearing, “We wouldn’t give you a dime for those two old broads.”
Bride Came C.O.D. : Ten dollars a pound is the going rate for freight, so charter pilot Steve Collins figures he’s owed 1,150, cash on delivery. His cargo is Joan Winfield, an heiress whose elopement with a musician is kiboshed when Steve kidnaps her so he can fly her to her irate papa. But then Joan finds a parachute. Comedy comes from a mother lode of sources in this screwball farce headlined by the ebullient pairing of James Cagney and Bette Davis, scripted by Julius J. and Philip G. Epstein (Casablanca, Arsenic and Old Lace) and full of favourite supporting talents. The stars (in their second and final film together) spar with harebrained zest, the story scoots along like butter in a hot pan and the happy result from start to end is C.O.D. – Comedy on Demand.
All This and Heaven Too : Bette Davis at the height of her phenomanal screen stardom. Charles Boyer in his only screen pairing with la Bette. A plot rich in mystery and grand emotion. A powerful period drama honoured with three 1940 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Fans get all this in All This, and Heaven Too. From Rachield's fact-based bestseller, the story follows Henriette (Davis), governess at the Paris home of the Dec de Praslin (Boyer) and his jealous wife (Barbara O'Neil). When governess and nobleman are drawn to each other, the Duchess reupts in fury... and meets a bloody fate. Soon Henriette and the Duc face a world eager to believe the Duc murdered his wife. And that gentle Henriette was a willing accomplice.
Kid Galahad : “There isn’t any room for feelings in this game,” racketeer and fight promoter Nick Donati snarls. Bet the house Nick’s feelings of jealousy and rage knock him flat in this influential ring saga linking professional boxing to criminal gambling. Edward G. Robinson is Nick, and tightly coiled Humphrey Bogart is Turkey Morgan, rival promoters who, like fighters flinging kidney punches, end up swapping close-range bullets. Bette Davis plays the moll who has a soft spot for the bellhop (Wayne Morris) Nick grooms for the heavyweight title. And prolific Michael Curtiz directs this first of his six collaborations with Bogart that would include the romantic masterwork Casablanca and the sly comedy We’re No Angels.
